You’re Biased

You are biased. You are driven by your ego. You vote based on your emotional response to a given topic, plank, or candidate. Whether it’s nature or nurture, you are a product of your environment.

I’m sure we have all seen the ethics puzzle below*:

Question 1: If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had eight children already, three who were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she had syphilis, would you recommend that she have an abortion?

Remember your honest answer and go to question 2.

Question 2: It is time to elect the world leader, and your’s is the deciding vote. After reading the facts about the three leading candidates, which candidate would get your vote?

  • Candidate A: He associates with crooked politicians, and consults with astrologers. He’s had two mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks up to ten Martinis a day.
  • Candidate B: He was ejected from office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college and drinks a large amounts of whisky every evening.
  • Candidate C: He is a decorated war hero. He’s a vegetarian, doesn’t smoke, drinks an occasional beer and hasn’t had any extra-marital affairs.

Though certain facts have been slightly exaggerated, the point remains, you did not wholly answer on your own, your past and present environment dictates how you answer the above questions. What if you were to change your environment? Would it affect your vote?

It’s nothing new that people move to areas that best fit them physically, emotionally, and even demographically; at times even without thought. Today, however, the trend is to move to areas that best fit you politically as well. While this is not entirely new, the scale of individuals and families uprooting from their generational home state and moving across the country is on the rise. One example on a larger scale is the Free State Project. Nearly 800 people have actively participated in the move to New Hampshire as of this writing, and more have stated they are in the planning stages.

There are also those of us who choose to live on the front line; Staunch Republicans living in Seattle, or Progressive Democrats living in small-town Texas. This group has either considered their environmental affect, their political outlook, and are fighting the current for change or just simply stuck with no where else to go. Whichever the case may be, these individuals normally have stress levels twice the national average; if so measured.

In the end, changing your environment could have significant affect on how you vote. We must realize, however, that disregarding your environment and social circles when you begin thinking about your political stance is not the best foot forward. Take a moment and think about your surroundings and your family culture as we approach midterm elections. Attempt to decipher how your political decisions develop and if you are wholly comfortable with where you stand on election issues. You alone are responsible for your vote. No one has the right to tell you how to vote or take that privilege from you. Educate and liberate.

I copied this ethics question from the interwebs. Some exaggerations include the fact that according to traditional theory, Hitler was only married a split second before the suicide pact was fulfilled. Ergo he did not really have time to commit infidelity as it were, though one could argue he was committing infidelity by not being married and yet living with women, blah, blah, blah, etc.

Anyway, here are the answers to the ethics questions: The abortion would have killed Beethoven. Candidate A is Franklin D. Roosevelt. Candidate B is Winston Churchill. Candidate C is Adolf Hitler.
